Hermanus
This is a sea-side town known as the heart of the Whale Route, just 127 km from Cape Town on a lovely scenic drive with plenty to do & see. This is an excursion you must take time to savour. The drive to Hermanus is part of the experience. You should arrange a “pit stop” along the way take in the sea, the wines, and picturesque views, as you journey through Gordon’s Bay, winding along the mountain through Betty’s Bay until you reach Hermanus.
In Hermanus during September – November there is a hive of activity with whale criers greeting you in the streets & a festive spirit around the town. Historically , this town was known as a whaling station but has now achieved international acclaim as the best vantage point on land /sea to view of whales mating. You can get up close & personal with the Southern White Whale who comes to mate every year, travelling over 10 000 km from Antarctica to birth in the bays along the Cape Coastline. See the whales “breaching” can be viewed from excellent vantage points. This is indeed an awesome experience.
There are many water sport activities available. Given that Hermanus is such a popular tourist destination, its best to make a reservation to secure your fun! Be prepared for a lovely day of sun & flea markets & crowded beaches. |
